HOMELAND IN PALESTINE The World Zionist Conference under the leadership of Theodore Herzl met in Switzerland in 1897 to advocate for a Jewish Homeland in Palestine. EMMA HAD ADVOCATED THIS IN EARLY 1880’S! One of the problems she faced by advocating this was the charge that she was advocating a preferable loyalty to the Jewish Cause. She claimed you could love your country and Judaism at the same time. SONNET AND STATUE In 1883 Emma was deeply involved with the needs of the many immigrants flowing into America each day. The same year France was building a statue to honor and celebrate “Liberty”! France and America shared their love of “Liberty”. Emma through her poem “The New Colossus” changed the theme of the statue from “Liberty” to “Welcome to the Immigrant”! |
